Agile Mind is delighted to support the Open Education Resources Initiative of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. We are making available here a gallery of selected animations that are designed to support learners in their journey to mastery of mathematics—from middle school, to Algebra I, to Geometry, to Algebra II and Precalculus, to Calculus, and Statistics.
These animations were developed in collaboration with hundreds of exemplary mathematics educators throughout the country as part of an initiative whose objective is to make it possible for every student to have the opportunity to succeed in learning a challenging mathematics curriculum, supported by a teacher who has access to the most promising practices in instruction and formative assessment. The larger services from which they are excerpted are available to schools and districts by subscription. And they contain more than a thousand animations of key concepts, as well as thousands of interactive problems and other resources for teachers and students to share.
Functions |
| Every day—although you may rarely think of it—you encounter changing quantities and the relationships between them. Each time you put gasoline in your car, you see how the total cost rises as the number of gallons increases. If your job pays by the hour, you know the number of hours you work determines your gross salary. And there are infinitely more examples of situations that can be represented by functions. Functions are useful because we can use them to make predictions and answer questions about these situations. |

Volume |
| How big should you make that new garage you're building to ensure that your car will fit inside it comfortably? When should you begin filling your swimming pool to guarantee that it will be ready to use when all of your guests show up for your swimming party? The answers to these questions, and many more that you must answer every day, require an understanding of the concept of volume.

Rate |
| You deal with all sorts of rates every day. Salary rates and interest rates affect your personal finances. Speed rates and fuel consumption rates are important to you when driving your car, taking a bus, or taking a taxi. Growth rates, passing rates, pulse rates, birth rates, postal rates, and exchange rates are other examples of rates the average person encounters each day. Because rates are so pervasive in daily life, understanding them and how they are used to describe the change between two quantities is extremely important. |
